I found that my moderators can give themselves access to areas that I had wished to keep "private".

Is there any way to only allow moderators to give permissions to areas that thye themselves only have permisions to?

Which version of the mod do you use ?
phpBB Version ?

If they can change permissions, they only change usergroup permissions
otherwise you add the admin_forumauth.php at your own risk

it exists an add-on part to add admin_ug_auth.php with low risk
but yes mods can change groups permissions
if you installed this add-on, you should have mod_ug_auth.php into your modcp dir

The only solution is to remove this file to prevent mess by moderators
By default, this file isn't included for this reason :)

Just uninstall the Mod :)

no seriously, remove the admin_ug_auth.php or mod_ug_auth.php in your modcp dir
Then apply some small fix you will find here to block moderator to delete user, change username, etc...
see below

To use the Mod CP only for certain moderators, currently not possible
